[Harrisburg, PA] Phoenix Contact was recently selected as the automation supplier for the Navistar Program. Navistar will produce V6 and V8 diesel engines for Ford trucks for twelve years beginning in 2000. Two plants for engine assembly will comprise the Navistar program. The first, in Huntsville, Alabama, will produce V6 and V8 engines. The second, an expansion of the Indianapolis plant, will produce V8 engines. Johann A. Krause will build the complete engine assembly line for both plants and Phoenix Contact will be the automation supplier for the engine assembly systems at both plants. "This program is the largest single contract ever issued to a vendor to produce engines for Ford and we are thrilled to be a part of it," said Vince Carioti, Automotive Accounts Manager at Phoenix Contact. INTERBUS will be the fieldbus of choice at both plants. AS2001, the latest technology in "enclosureless control", will be utilized. Additional automotive manufacturers and OEM's use the AS2001 technology to produce Powertrain components. Chuck Bingham, Manufacturing Systems Engineering Resource Leader at Navistar states, "I'm very excited to see this cutting edge technology in our plants." Engine production begins at the Hunstville plant in the fall 2000 and production in Indianapolis begins in the fall 2001.
